When A HOUSE MADE OF SPLINTERS had its World Premiere at Sundance 2022, little did director Simon Lereng Wilmont know that Russia would invade Ukraine just weeks later. The film is a tender portrait of several children in an orphanage in Eastern Ukraine whose parents could no longer care for them due to issues stemming from living on the frontlines of the ongoing conflict. Unlike images of orphanages that generally come to mind - sterile and unwelcoming - this one is different. Passionate and kind caretakers have made this place a haven for the children, and while it is no replacement for a proper home of their own, it is full of love.
"I hope to bring attention not just to the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine but to the long-term, less visible effects it has on children and their families living in the region. With this film, I wanted to show the heartbreaking consequences together with the friendships and resilience these kids have," says Lereng Wilmont. The entire filmmaking team has gone a step further, helping to ensure all the characters have been safe since the invasion, many of whom made it to Europe. They are raising funds for those featured in the film, Eva, Sasha, Alina, and Kolya, to support educational needs, accommodation, and other opportunities that can ensure a better future for the children.
