BEAR 71

1/3
2012 / 20 mins / Canada / English
An interactive documentary from the National Film Board of Canada, produced alongside Google, IDFA DocLab, and Sound and Vision, from the perspective of a tagged and traced bear, Bear 71. This beautiful female bear was tracked continuously from 2001 to 2009 by "some rangers playing God." A narration from the point-of-view of the bear guides the viewer through this innovative form of storytelling. This sensitive first-person (or first-bear in this case) narration starkly contrasts the Matrix-like view of the data and tracking collected. The interactive elements of this kind of filmmaking are essential to achieve BEAR 71's goals: understanding the world from the position of a species controlled, violated, harmed, and hunted by another and examining the ways in which "technology divorces us from nature, even while allowing us to keep closer tabs on it."
