EARTHRISE

2018 / 30 mins / USA / English

Told solely by the Apollo 8 astronauts, EARTHRISE recounts the story of the first image captured of the Earth from space in 1968.

The Overview Effect, a term coined in 1987, is described as a cognitive shift that "transforms astronauts' perspective of the planet and mankind's place upon it." Those that have seen the Earth from space report a greater understanding of the unity of our world. Notions of division, borders, and separation melt away. This photo, the first of the entire Earth, made the Overview Effect available to those of us bound by gravity.
