“Warrior Monks” and “Guardian Mothers” they call themselves, the martial arts champions who are members of an Italian sect living together in a monastery. Led by a Kung Fu master, they are like Shaolin monks but with a Catholic twist. Utterly devoted to their faith, they train constantly so they are able to combat evil in the name of the Father. A film to investigate the profound motivations for a radical choice, the reasons for devotion. What is one willing to lose, in order to win in the name of faith?
When asked what she learned from making FAITH, director Valentina Pedicini said, "I gained a new level of awareness. I’ve learned many things about me as a director and about my film language, so perhaps this experience will benefit my next projects. I’ve learned the art of being patient, not only as a professional but in a wider sense. I’ve both loved this film and suffered because of it. It still has a strong emotional echo on me, months after its completion. This also makes me think about the power of nonfiction cinema. You put yourself and your certainties at stake, fully."
Valentina passed away in 2020 after battling cancer, only after seeing FAITH take the world by storm, screening at festivals across the globe. And as producer Donatella Palermo said of Pedicini's films: "We can sit and watch them and something of hers will remain."
