FIRE AT SEA

1/3
2016 / 108 mins / Italy, France / Italian
Directed by master Italian documentarian Gianfranco Rosi, FIRE AT SEA is an observational and absorbing film that follows several residents on the small island of Lampedusa, primarily a young but maturing boy named Samuele, in their day-to-day lives while paralleling their stories with those of African migrants arriving to the island. It is difficult to clearly define what this film is “about.” It is a film about so many things that intertwine, speak to larger truths, go beyond the scope of the present to explore past and future, and connect us all; a film that both explicitly and implicitly, consciously and unconsciously, brings viewers into a multitude of phenomena, revealing “the subtle connections between the micro and macro realities of our globalized world.”
