INSIDE KABUL

2023 / 30 mins / France, Denmark / English

INSIDE KABUL is the story of the Taliban takeover of 2021, told entirely through WhatsApp voice messages sent by two young Afghan women, friends Marwa and Raha, sent to French radio-journalist Caroline. As their country and lives changed drastically overnight, they describe to Caroline in intimate detail their journey from that point on. Marwa fled with her husband to a refugee home in the UAE, while Raha stayed behind with her family, showing two diverging paths when a nation falls. Layered over simple yet elegant animation, the recordings paint a portrait of refugee life, both heartbreaking and hopeful. Taking the audience into the perspective of these women, a first-person viewpoint often lacking in mainstream news and media, INSIDE KABUL, made in close collaboration with Marwa and Raha, is a powerful audio diary that, as the Taliban remains in power, should not be missed.
