"Fortunately, I had not been to university," Jane Goodall, the "Chimpanzee Lady," states as she recounts being sent to The Gombe to begin what would become her groundbreaking study of chimps in the wild. She was able to observe with abundant unbiased curiosity and a fresh analysis. In the early months of observing chimpanzee behavior, Jane noticed that individual chimps showed specific personality traits, had rich emotional lives, and used tools. "It was hard for me to believe what I had seen. We must now redefine man or accept chimpanzees as human," she said. Jane's study was a pivotal achievement, fundamentally changing our understanding of animal and human minds. Due to her observations and daring conclusions, Goodall shifted our entire perspective on humanity and inter-species kinship.
