The experimental, even radical way in which this docu-portrait-musical is made mimics Bowie's life and work. It is an explosion of creative expression, making for a seamless unity of content and form. Just as the film shows how Bowie reinvented himself time and again, director Brett Morgen reinvents what it means to construct a cinematic portrait.
