QUEEN OF HEARTS: AUDREY FLACK

2019 / 75 mins / USA / English

QUEEN OF HEARTS takes a holistic look at the life and art of Audrey Flack. Flack is an American painter and sculptor known for championing the photorealist movement of the 1970s. As a woman and a mother in the male-dominated arts scene of New York, Flack was a pioneer who believed resolutely in herself. Her large, vibrant signature painting style - so bold it could stop you in your tracks - was a far cry from her early abstract expressionist work, and the "art world" took its sweet time in appreciating and respecting this new photorealist style. Now 91 years old, Flack is still creating, with her credo as follows:

I believe in art.
I do not believe in the "Art World" as it is today.
I do not believe in art as a commodity.

Great art is in exquisite balance.
It is Restorative.

I believe in the Energy of art,
and through the the use of that energy,
the artists ability to transform his or her life,
and by example, the lives of others.

I believe that through our art,
and through the projection
of transcended imagery,
we can mend and heal the planet.

- Audrey Flack, Commencement address at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, May 1974
