SANS SOLEIL

1983 / 100 mins / France / English

SANS SOLEIL is a 1982 film by French filmmaker Chris Marker which mixes documentary images and sound with a fictional narration. It is a delicate and meditative essay film on memory, time, place, and the relation between those three phenomena. A fictional narration is voiced by a woman who is supposedly reading letters sent to her from a cameraman that has traveled the globe and thus has a unique perspective on various peoples, places, and the world surrounding him.

SANS SOLEIL defies the once-strict definition of documentary while also rejecting the label of mockumentary. The film incorporates both fictional elements and a relatively undefined story structure for reasons not random or meaningless. These decisions by Chris Marker add to the meaning, emotion, and concept of the film, one unwilling to sink into a narrow or shallow categorization of documentary.
