There's an interesting phenomenon that can happen in storytelling in which someone repeats a story they were told, but makes it their own, even inserts themself into it. Memory is a tricky thing, and our mind has a funny way of sometimes making us the main character in stories that we weren't even present for. I'm sure there are psychological reasons for this, but we won't get into those here.
