STUDIO 54

2018 / 98 mins / USA / English

STUDIO 54 charts the rapid rise and eventual downfall of one of New York's most epic nightclubs. The short but extraordinary life of the (in)famous discotheque spanned the second half of the '70s. All the right things converged in the late seventies for Studio 54 to become what it did. It was the Age of the Celebrity, after the creation of the pill and before the HIV/AIDS outbreak, and the Vietnam War was finally over. An atmosphere of "fuck the system" lay over the city. Amongst all this, even catalyzed by all this, a disco club was born. Studio 54 was the place to be, full of movies stars, musicians, models, moguls, even politicians - Andy Warhol, Bella Abzug, Cher, Diana Ross, Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli, Dolly Parton, John Belushi, Diane von Fürstenberg, to name just a few... It was an oasis of hedonism, a harbor of extravagance in every aspect, a place to let loose in a rapidly evolving world. It remained that way only for a brief period. They closed their doors after a series of events, primarily due to taxation issues. Even in this haven, one built on the ideals of losing your inhibition and forgetting the establishment, the system crept in. Studio 54 was like a shooting star, a brief but blazing moment in time, a kind of paradise lost, and this film is a perfect memorial to it.
