When a person dies, their secrets can finally come to life. So when Arnon's Holocaust-escapist grandparents pass away, the skeletons in their closet come out. This is the story of a grandson's quest to make sense of their secret: they were friends with Nazis.
In the 1930s, Gerda Tuchler and her husband emigrated from Nazi Germany to Tel Aviv. Gerda lived in the same apartment in Tel Aviv until she died at age 98. Upon cleaning out the apartment, a home with more German books than Hebrew, Gerda's filmmaker grandson Arnon Goldfinger stumbles upon evidence of his grandparents' friendship with high-ranking Nazi official Leopold von Mildenstein, head of the SS Office for Jewish Affairs. The friendship, it seems, lasted even after WWII. A journey ensues to uncover the full story of this mind-boggling friendship, a family secret that defies logic or reason. As witnesses to this journey, the audience is privy to an intimate family portrait and an examination of generational differences of thought concerning the Holocaust and collective trauma.
